Using Sustainable Materials to Reduce Waste
and Strengthen Food Supply Chains

In collaboration with the Georgia Center of Innovation for Manufacturing and the University of Georgia, RYAM has developed an innovative method to reduce waste by transforming manufacturing byproducts into valuable new products.

The Prebiotics for Poultry partnership promotes sustainable poultry farming by offering a healthy, eco-friendly alternative to antibiotic feed additives. This groundbreaking solution supports two of Georgia’s largest industries—poultry and forestry—while advancing the growing trend of sustainable, antibiotic-free poultry production.

By leveraging sustainable materials, RYAM is helping reduce waste, strengthen essential food supply chains, and support environmentally responsible practices in agriculture and manufacturing.

BioFuel: Advancing the Transition to Clean, Renewable Energy

RYAM is at the forefront of the world’s renewable energy transition with the development of a second-generation (2G) bioethanol facility at our Tartas, France plant, supporting Europe’s rapidly growing biofuels market.

Our 2G bioethanol is sustainably produced by recycling wood-based feedstock and co-products from cellulose manufacturing. As one of the first facilities in France to produce bioethanol fuel from cellulose, this innovative solution supports cleaner vehicle emissions in alignment with the European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED2).

Through collaborations with major industry leaders like ExxonMobil, RYAM is advancing green and sustainable solutions, underscoring our commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship.

BioEnergy: Powering Our Operations and Communities

At RYAM, our investments in renewable energy not only power our operations but also supply surplus energy to support neighboring communities. On average, our facilities contribute over 60 MW of electricity to local grids every hour—enough to power more than 40,000 homes, based on standard U.S. energy usage.

In Quebec, 99% of our operations are powered by hydroelectricity, a key component of our sustainable energy mix. This renewable energy source plays a vital role in achieving our goal to reduce emissions by 40% by 2030, reinforcing our commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

BioProducts: Driving Sustainable Innovation with Anomera

At RYAM, our commitment to sustainability and innovation propels us to create high-quality, sustainable solutions for products like LCD screens, auto parts, eyeglasses, and life-saving pharmaceuticals.

In 2017, this spirit of innovation inspired RYAM to support Anomera, a Montreal-based leader in cellulose-based nanomaterials. By providing financial backing and technical expertise, RYAM helped Anomera develop its patented, eco-friendly process for manufacturing carboxylated Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNC).

This breakthrough innovation offers a green technology building block with vast potential across multiple industries. For instance, Anomera’s products, crafted using RYAM’s sustainable cellulose, serve as a biodegradable alternative to fossil-fuel-based microbeads that pollute waterways and harm wildlife.

RYAM’s strategic investment in Anomera exemplifies our dedication to fostering sustainable innovation and collaboration. Together, we’re exploring the immense potential of sustainable solutions, advancing a shared vision for a greener economy and healthier environment.

Who is Anomera?

Anomera is an early stage cellulosics based company that utilized Cellulose Specialties products produced by RYAM as a key raw material. The Company manufactures carboxylated Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNC) in a patented eco-friendly method that delivers a superior nanomaterial from sustainably harvested Canadian Forests.

What differentiates Anomera’s products?

Anomera’s products are certified “readily biodegradable” and are targeted in markets that currently utilize less environmentally friendly silica and petroleum-based plastic microbeads that have littered our oceans. In addition, Anomera products bring other physical properties, including smoothing effects and the ability to uniquely carry dyes creating pigments for cosmetic end-uses. In addition, Anomera patented DextraCelTM brings strength and dispersion capabilities to a multitude of industrial applications.

Where will Anomera’s products be used?

This platform product is creating new opportunities for the multi-billion dollar markets in cosmetics and skincare, the industries of cement, polymer composites, coatings, pigments, agriculture, and for human wellness in pharma and life sciences.

How will Anomera go to market?

Anomera has partnered with Croda, a global leader in cosmetics and personal care ingredients, as its exclusive distributor for these segments. Croda possesses a full formulation capability and a portfolio of complementary products that will allow it to accelerate Anomera’s successful launch into the cosmetics and personal care market.

Where are they located?

Anomera’s head offices and applications lab are in Montreal, Quebec. Anomera is currently developing a Specialty Manufacturing Facility (SMF) in Temiscaming, adjacent to RYAM’s Temiscaming Cellulose Specialties facility. Construction is underway and production is expected to commence in Q2 2021.

Why is this important to RYAM?

RYAM and Anomera share the vision of producing sustainable products that add to the quality of people’s lives while respecting the planet. Anomera operates in an adjacent, downstream space to RYAM and has products which will benefit RYAM’s core manufacturing.

Who is the Anomera team?

Benoit Garant, President and Chief Executive Officer, a successful serial entrepreneur, leads a strong and dedicated management team, focused on innovation and development. The Company employs 11 Ph.D.’s and Material Science scientists that focus on new applications for the 21st-century bio-economy.

RYAM BioNova France: Wood-Based Lignosulfonates for More Sustainable Industrial Solutions

As manufacturers look for more sustainable alternatives to petrochemical-based additives, RYAM BioNova France offers ARBO lignosulfonates, wood-based biopolymers derived from renewable raw materials.

Produced in Tartas, France, ARBO lignosulfonates are distinct from lignin products and are available in liquid and powder form.

RYAM BioNova France is currently the only RYAM Group entity manufacturing lignosulfonates; the Temiscaming lignosulfonate production unit stopped in April 2024.

These products are designed to support a wide range of industrial and agricultural applications. They can help manufacturers reduce their reliance on fossil-based inputs while maintaining the technical performance required in their formulations and processes.

Our lignosulfonates are used across a wide range of industrial and agricultural applications. Depending on the formulation and process, they can act as binders, dispersants, water-reducing agents, processing aids, or support formulations through their complexing and chelating properties.

Key application areas include:

  • Agrochemical, fertilizer and soil amendment applications, as binders for fertilizer granules, organic soil amendments and agricultural formulations
  • Carbon-based materials, including carbon black granulation and activated carbon production, as binders or processing aids
  • Cement and concrete additives, where lignosulfonates act as dispersants and water-reducing agents
  • Bricks and ceramics, as binders and processing aids
  • Dust control applications, as wood-based binders for dust suppression
  • Leather tanning, as auxiliary agents in tanning formulations

Through its ARBO range, RYAM BioNova France supports customers looking for renewable, wood-derived solutions that combine industrial performance with a more sustainable approach to materials.
