Research & Development: Driving Sustainable Innovations

RYAM operates two premier Research & Development (R&D) Center in Jesup, Georgia and Bordeaux, France. These R&D centers power our culture of innovation and sustainability. Our scientists, researchers, and engineers create customer-focused solutions that leverage the power of trees and working forests to shape a more sustainable future.

Within our state-of-the-art Research and Development Centers, we collaborate closely with customers to develop groundbreaking new technologies and techniques. By understanding our customers’ manufacturing processes, we create bespoke products that meet evolving needs.

Moreover, through global strategic partnerships like those with Grenoble INP-Pagora and Bordeaux University in France, Auburn University, the University of Georgia, the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), North Carolina State University, and the Center for BioPlastics and BioComposites, we drive transformative research, championing innovations that address some of our world’s toughest challenges.

Supported by our rich history of innovation, RYAM’s researchers push the boundaries of what is possible, focusing on the unique value and versatility of trees.

Culture of Innovation

RYAM first developed a dissolving pulp cellulose-based product in 1927. Since then, we’ve been at the forefront of sustainable research and development. Today, we’re committed to the concept of a “circular economy,” in which sustainable, bio-based, biodegradable materials are used to minimize waste and improve environmental impact. Even in the early days, we used renewable biomass to power our plants. Today, the possibilities are nearly limitless.

Our company specializes in sustainable solutions that help our customers make responsible choices that result in business success.

Today, as in generations past, RYAM is powered by innovation and committed to progress. Our collaboration with industry and university partners has created new solutions that will help meet the growing demand for alternatives to fossil-fuel based products. In addition to maintaining two of the most sophisticated, cellulose-focused R&D labs in the world, RYAM’s culture of innovation rests on continuous improvement—a commitment (and a responsibility) shared by everyone at RYAM to promote innovation, pursue efficiency, and be good stewards of the environment.

With a dedication to meeting customer needs, and commitment to sustainable sourcing, we’ve earned a reputation as problem-solvers who shape the future.
