So began Ishmael — a bold and unconventional novel that examined humanity’s relationship with the planet through a philosophical dialogue between a man and a telepathic gorilla. Behind that surprising premise lay a deeply provocative message — one that challenged how we thought about culture, progress, and our place in the world.
As a recent featured read in the Professional Development Employee Resource Group (PDERG), Ishmael prompted members to question deeply rooted norms and belief systems — and to reflect on what it meant to live and lead responsibly. It was more than a book; it served as a philosophical journey that aligned with PDERG’s mission to foster personal and professional growth through reflection and dialogue.
What Is PDERG?
The Professional Development Employee Resource Group (PDERG) was founded in 2023 by Amanda Tedeschi (former RYAM employee) and Genna Smith, Director of Internal Audit, inspired by their shared passion for learning and personal growth. The vision was to create a space where employees across RYAM could come together to build skills, broaden perspectives, and grow — individually and collectively.
PDERG promotes professional development, meaningful connections, and continuous learning through shared experiences that bring together people from all levels and functions of the company.
A Forum for Growth
Through quarterly book selections and discussions, PDERG creates space for employees to explore ideas that promote leadership, collaboration, and performance — all while connecting with colleagues across the company.
What We’ve Read So Far
Since its inception, the group has read:
- Atomic Habits — James Clear
- Dare to Lead — Brené Brown
- The Energy Bus: 10 Rules to Fuel Your Life, Work, and Team with Positive Energy — Jon Gordon
- The Gap and the Gain: The High Achievers’ Guide to Happiness, Confidence, and Success — Dan Sullivan & Dr. Benjamin Hardy
- Lead It Like Lasso: A Leadership Book for Life. Your Life — Marnie Stockman & Nick Coniglio
- Presence: Bringing Your Boldest Self to Your Biggest Challenges — Amy Cuddy
- Ishmael — Daniel Quinn
The discussion around Ishmael sparked some of PDERG’s most thought-provoking conversations yet, encouraging members to reflect deeply on values, purpose, and leadership.
