March marks National Engineering Month in Canada — an opportunity to recognize the engineers who drive innovation, operational performance, and long-term sustainability. This month, we highlight Adrew Barquin, Process Engineer II, Technical Services HYP & PPB, at our Témiscaming facility.
Adrew’s interest in engineering began with a passion for chemistry sparked by a high school teacher in the Philippines. After completing high school in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada in 2003, he chose chemical engineering to apply science in a practical, results-driven way. That decision led him to build his career in the pulp and paper industry.
As a Process Engineer in paperboard, Adrew focuses on optimizing manufacturing performance. He identifies near-term improvements and longer-term opportunities that strengthen efficiency and competitiveness.
He is particularly proud of contributing to the development of new high-yield pulp grades that help position RYAM competitively in global markets. Earlier in his career, he supported the anaerobic treatment of post-extraction washer filtrates at the specialty cellulose mill — an initiative that improved operational performance while reinforcing environmental responsibility.
Today, Adrew develops, plans, and executes trials to advance new paperboard grades, evaluate alternative pulp sources and chemical products, and refine pulp and coating recipes. His work directly supports product innovation and operational reliability.
For future engineers, Adrew stresses the importance of being well-rounded and taking a genuine interest in others. Technical expertise matters, but strong collaboration strengthens outcomes.
To Adrew, engineering excellence means delivering timely, cost-effective solutions while respecting operational constraints — a disciplined, practical approach that drives measurable results.
This National Engineering Month, we thank Adrew for his contributions and impact across our operations.
