For more than two decades, Dane Townsend has been a fixture at RYAM’s Jesup, Georgia plant, continuing a three-generation family legacy. His grandfather worked as an instrument mechanic for 43 years, his mother, Rhonda Townsend, will celebrate 50 years in Safety this April, and his father spent decades in the finishing room. “It’s really special to be part of something that’s been such a big part of my family’s life,” Dane shared.
Dane joined RYAM shortly after high school, following a year and a half at Rail Link, his former employer, a local railroad service company. He spent 17 years in the C Machine room, working his way up to Operator 1 on C Machine before transitioning to his current role as Lubricator—a move inspired by his family and the desire for a steadier schedule. “My wife and I agreed it was time for me to come off shift work. It was a gamble, but it gave me more time with my family.”
As a Lubricator, Dane ensures the C Machine runs smoothly, checking flow meters, inspecting gearbox sight glasses, monitoring pumps, and watching for leaks or contamination. “It’s the only job I’ve had that tells on you if you don’t do it,” he said with a grin. “If something’s off—like water mixed with oil—you’ve got to act fast, or the equipment can fail pretty quick.”
The work can be challenging, especially in cold weather when oil thickens. “Adding oil in the winter takes a lot longer than in the summer,” he explained. Despite the demands, Dane takes pride in staying ahead of problems. “If something fails, the finger can easily point to you,” he said. “So, I make it a point to check everything carefully every day.”
After twenty years at the mill, Dane has seen plenty of change—from new technology to shifts in leadership—but what stands out most is how people evolve. “When I started, I was one of the young guys,” he said. “Now I’m one of the old guys. Some of the kids I used to coach in Little League are working here now. Everything comes full circle.”
Outside of work, Dane and his wife live five miles from the mill and stay busy with their youngest son, AJ, 11. Their three older sons, 18, 19, and 22, are out on their own, but AJ keeps them on their toes. “He says he’s never moving out,” Dane laughed. “He’s just going to build right next to us.” The family also loves to travel. “Last year we went to Cozumel and Costa Maya, and we’re planning another trip in May,” he said.
Through it all, Dane’s motivation remains the same—his family, his pride in his work, and his deep connection to RYAM. “I’ve seen a lot of change, but this place and the people mean a lot to me,” he reflected. That dedication—and the Townsend legacy—embody the spirit that keeps RYAM Jesup strong.
