Since joining RYAM in August 1989, Albert Kelly has built a remarkable 36-year career defined by dedication, adaptability, and pride in his work. Today, he serves as a Lubricator in the Maintenance Department at RYAM’s Jesup, Georgia facility, where his meticulous approach keeps operations running safely and efficiently. Responsible for maintaining and inspecting more than 300 pieces of equipment, Albert begins each day outfitted in PPE, tools in hand, making his rounds to ensure that every pump and motor performs as it should. “Every day is different,” he says. “It’s exciting because you’re not micromanaged—it’s on you to make sure things run right.”
Albert’s career began in Finishing, where he spent 24 years before moving to FRIFRS for two years and eventually transitioning into maintenance. Over the decades, he has seen significant change—from handwritten logs to computer-based systems like SAP—and has adapted at every stage. “It’s changed a lot—the systems, the equipment, the pace. Everything’s faster now,” he explains. “As things evolve, you just keep learning.” Although new technology brings challenges, Albert stays motivated by one clear goal: keeping operations running smoothly to meet production targets.
A Jesup native, Albert lives just seven minutes from the mill and takes great pride in being part of the local community. He has raised four sons, all of whom he describes as hardworking and successful young men. “I’ve got four boys—all good kids, never been in trouble, always busy doing something positive. That’s a blessing,” he says.
Outside of work, Albert leads an equally busy life. He’s a personal trainer, starting his mornings at 5 a.m. working with seniors five days a week. In the afternoons and evenings, he trains youth athletes and serves as President of the Southeast Georgia Basketball Association. He also referees college basketball games and remains deeply involved in sports—a lifelong passion that started when he played both football and basketball himself. When he does find downtime, he enjoys the peace of hiking with his wife, having explored trails across Utah, Denver, and other parts of the U.S., with Mount Rainier next on their list. “Pictures don’t do it justice,” he says of Utah. “You have to be there—it’s beautiful.”
In addition to his athletic and community involvement, Albert has quietly made a powerful impact through a support group he started at a local gym just before COVID. The group helps people dealing with anxiety, stress, PTSD, depression, and recovery from drug or alcohol issues. Albert volunteers his time at no cost, and the gym supports participants until they get back on their feet. It’s a no-judgment, people-friendly environment that promotes positivity and personal growth. Members meet Tuesday through Thursday for one- to two-hour workouts at their own pace. “It’s not advertised, but it’s been really successful,” Albert shares. “One of my favorite guys—he was suicidal after losing his wife of 18 years to COVID—now leads his own group and employs several of our members at his cabinet shop.” The program welcomes participants ages 16 to 50 and provides 24-hour access to both the gym and Albert for support. “It’s an emotional challenge,” he admits, “but what a blessing. Some don’t make it, but most do. Men and women alike—it’s made a difference.”
Albert’s leadership extends beyond the gym and the plant floor. He also serves as Vice President of USW Local 787, representing his colleagues and working closely with RYAM’s Human Resources team. “This HR group is by far the best we’ve ever had,” he shares. “It’s the first time all four locals trust and get along with HR. They do a tremendous job.”
After more than three decades, Albert remains energized by his work, his team, and his community. His story reflects the spirit of RYAM, steady, skilled, and committed. From keeping machinery humming to helping others reach their potential, Albert Kelly continues to make a lasting impact both inside and outside the Jesup plant.
